NIST 800-88 is the data wiping standard for today
September 19, 2023
With over 35 years history in the ITAD industry OCM have the experience, skills and knowledge to ensure your old information isn’t just deleted it is erased permanently. It is important to securely erase all data from the hard drives and other storage devices. This will help to protect your privacy and prevent your personal information from falling into the wrong hands.
Blancco and Certus
To make sure sensitive data is securely erased with no risk of recovery, OCM partners with Blancco and Certus, both of which are optimised for the highest data erasure standard in the world, NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 Purge and Clear, set by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Clear applies techniques to sanitise data in all user-addressable storage locations for protection against simple non-invasive data recovery techniques.
Purge and clear
Purge applies techniques to sanitise data in all storage locations that render data recovery infeasible using state of the art laboratory techniques.
NIST 800-88r1 specifies a list of firmware commands compliant with Purge for each drive controller. Blancco and Certus identifies the drive and runs the optimal commands as per the drive and NIST 800-88r1. Not all drives have a reliable Purge mechanism so both pieces of software offer automatic fallback to Clear.
Blancco and Certus has the highest possible Purge rate and runs commands to:
- both remove Disk Configuration Overlays (DCO) and
- Host Protected Areas (HPA)
- wipe the data
- reset encryption keys and
- clear the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip
All ensuring the highest possible guarantees of data erasure.
